How I keep my stuff in sync and safe

I decided to get rid of Dropbox. And I decided I don’t want to spend a fortune on fantastic hardware and software. So right now I now have the following setup to keep my important data in sync and safe from physical disaster.

Backups

I have two simple external USB powered disks on two different physical locations. I back them up with the ever brilliant SuperDuper!, which creates bootable copies of your computer. I backup one disk when I’m at home, the other when I’m at work. I plug the disk in, leave it there for a few minutes and I’m done. It’s really that simple, and it’s very cheap. And it’s not automated, which means I check it manually every week. Which is good.

Sync

I want to be able to access some data all the time, wherever I am. Even when I don’t have my laptop with me. Dropbox was nice for this job, but I replaced it with Bittorrent Sync, which might even be better. I sync the important stuff with a Raspberry Pi with an external hard disk connected to it. But you could use any old computer for the same purpose. If you have multiple computers on different locations running all the time it probably gets even better. But this simple and very cheap setup works too.

The rest

The rest is done via version control.

  1. This is what I call a very useful and helpful article. I was just this day thinking about a Raspberry Pi. You always seem to be 5 steps ahead of everybody.
